New Format
Some big changes for the tournament!!2024 see's the 42nd installment of the annual Ouyen Lawn Tennis Clubs - Rohan Gregg Memorial Labour Day Tournament.
In 2020 we introduced a new format after 37 years of the old format. Feedback was very positive for the change in format, so we're looking forward to the fifth year with the new format.
The changes were made to ensure everyone gets at least 1 match of tennis in good time, this was in response to the fact there have been players who haven't had their first hit until well into the afternoon due to their opponents making finals in other grades. The new format is explained below and sees everyone entering 1 section/grade of senior tennis, instead of 2 as it used to be. Meanwhile there will still be junior and veteran grades.
The New Format Explained
The new changes will of course start from when you fill in your online entry. You will see the option of entering in 4 different sections, section 1,2,3 or 4.
Section 1 will be for the Open and A grade players. Their first match will be against another player who has entered section 1 in a qualifying match. This will be a best of 3 set match with the winner progressing into the open grade, while the loser will participate in A grade.
Section 2 will be for A grade and B grade players. Once again they will play another player who has entered in section 2 in a qualifying match. The winner of this match will progress into A grade, while the loser plays B grade. This will be a 8 game set.
Section 3 will be for B grade and C grade players. Once again a section 3 entered player will play another section 3 entered player with the winner progressing into B grade, while the loser will play C grade. This will also be a 8 game set.
Section 4 will be for C and D grade players. Once again a section 4 entered player will play another section 4 entered player with the winner progressing into C grade while the loser plays D grade. This will also be a 8 game set.
All matches played after these section qualifying matches are played will be knock out in all grades. There will be no E grade. There will still be junior 14 and under and 12 and under competitions which will remain round robin, as there will still be veteran competitions which will also be round robin. The committee will reserve the right to regrade players in all sections in the interest of fair and even tennis.
Discussion has been taking place for a few years as to how we can fix the problem of people waiting for a few hours before their first match, and this year we have decided the best way to see if this format works is to implement it. We also anticipate that the actual running of the tournament, and scheduling of matches will be a lot easier as matches can simply be played down the sheet, with no waiting to see what happens in other grades.
So basically if it is a success it will be here to stay, if not than we will explore other options. We think people like the Ouyen tournament as it is a knockout tournament, and we were keen to keep it that way, as there are plenty of other round robin tournaments around."
